Smoke Prophecy in the Quran was fulfilled on January 22, 1991

INTRODUCTION

The smoke prophecy in the Quran was fulfilled on January 22, 1991. This fact, based on the Quran, was shared with some submitters* in the fall of 1991.

The contents of this page were shared with some submitters for feedback. Because I have suggested that the smoke was fulfilled in a way that did not follow the circumstances that Dr. Rashad Khalifa had stated it might, it was suggested that my position would be considered tantamount to not supporting God’s messenger.

I would like to address those concerns up front. Nothing in this page challenges or questions any religious practices confirmed by God’s messenger nor religious law fully detailed in the Quran. This page points out that the smoke prophecy took place in accordance with the verses of the Quran – after an enlightening messenger had come, and within a few days of what the messenger wrote in his last newsletter.

My intent is to share my understanding of the fulfillment of the smoke prophecy in the Quran.

It is my hope that some will provide feedback or support or demonstrate why my proposition is incorrect based on the Quran.

PROPHECY OF SMOKE IN THE QURAN

Sura 44 is entitled “Smoke” and each individual Sura name has prominence in the Quran.

Verses in the Sura 44 regarding the smoke prophecy.

[44:9] Indeed, they are doubtful, heedless.
[44:10] Therefore, watch for the day when the sky brings a profound smoke.
[44:11] It will envelope the people; this is a painful retribution.
[44:12] “Our Lord, relieve this retribution for us; we are believers.”
[44:13] Now that it is too late, they remember! An enlightening messenger had come to them.
[44:14] But they turned away from him, saying, “Well educated, but crazy!”
[44:15] We will relieve the retribution for awhile; you will soon revert.
[44:16] The day we strike the big stroke, we will avenge.

Observations about the above verses (44:9-16):

A: THE PROPHECY

[44:10] Therefore, watch for the day when the sky brings a profound smoke.
[44:11] It will envelope the people; this is a painful retribution.

1. Smoke from the sky. From the dictionary definition of sky, whether in English or Arabic, an explicit conclusion cannot be made that the source of smoke has to be outside the earth. The Quran itself uses the word sky in numerous verses with quite a few verses referring to water from the sky. ‘Water from the sky’ originates from ground through the process of evaporation.

2. A specific day.

3. Smoke will envelop the people. Please note that the verse does not say all the people. The same Arabic word in 2:24 and 66:6 does not mean all the people.

4. This (the smoke) is a painful retribution.

B: THE IMPLORING AND PRAYER

[44:12] “Our Lord, relieve this retribution for us; we are believers.”
[44:13] Now that it is too late, they remember! . . .
[44:13] How come they now take heed . . . (Translation per newsletter)

Verse 44:12 in quotation marks is the imploring of some who were afflicted by the smoke. The imploring of “Our Lord, relieve this retribution for us; we are believers” is no different from the imploring (as an example) in the following verse:

[31:32] When violent waves surround them, they implore GOD, sincerely devoting their prayers to Him alone. But as soon as He saves them to the shore, some of them revert (as in 44:15). None discards our revelations except those who are betrayers, unappreciative.

God is telling us in 44:13, that after it is too late (the affliction of the smoke has started), they (44:9,14) remembered God and implored Him just like in verse 31:32. People remember God during an affliction.

The quotation marks in verse 44:12 is profound and an unmistakable reference that the words in these verses were uttered by some who were afflicted by the smoke, claimed to be believers, but were not believers (44:9). The statement, “we are believers,” does not mean they were actually believers but that they claimed to be so. Many individuals (Muslims, Christians, etc.) claim to be believers, but are not so, based on the definition of a believer (49:14) in the Quran. Verses 71:26-28, 79:24 and 7:16 are examples of statements made by others in quotation marks which cannot be taken at face value just like verse 44:12. Thus, a conclusion cannot be made that the individuals making that statement became submitters like us who have accepted God’s messenger of the Covenant and who obey and follow God’s words in the Quran. The verses do not state nor can a conclusion be made that people in great numbers would become believers and accept the messenger of the covenant because of the smoke sign.

C: A HISTORICAL FACT

[44:13] An enlightening messenger had come to them.
[44:14] But they turned away from him, saying, “Well educated, but crazy!”

God is giving us a historical fact. This historical fact was documented by Dr. Rashad Khalifa prior to his passing in his Authorized Translation as well as his March 1990 newsletter.

Historical fact in the Translation

The footnote of verse 44:13 states, “The sum of Sura and verse numbers (44+13) is 57, 19×3, and this Quranic code was proclaimed by God’s Messenger of the Covenant (Appendices 1, 2, & 26) and the subtitle for the verse states ” God’s Messenger of the Covenant*.”

Historical fact in the Newsletter

The proofs are abundant that the messenger referred to in 44:13 is God’s Messenger of the Covenant:

The description of the messenger by his adversaries as “Well educated, but crazy” (44:14) has already been uttered by today’s disbelievers in reference to Rashad Khalifa.

D: SUMMARY OF THE SMOKE PROPHECY IN THE QURAN

1. A messenger of God who was rejected as “Well educated, but crazy.” (44:13-14)
2. Subsequently there was the painful retribution of the smoke. (44:10-11)
3. Imploring, prayer and remembrance by the people afflicted by the smoke. (44:12-13)

SUBMISSION PERSPECTIVE NEWSLETTERS

MUSLIM PERSPECTIVE JUNE 1986

In the June 1986 Muslim Perspective, Dr. Rashad Khalifa stated the following:

One more Quranic sign towards the end of the world fulfilled.

The nuclear reactor accident of Chernobyl, USSR fits all the descriptions as stated in Quran 44:10-15.

One observation in the June 1986 Perspective is the conclusion by the messenger that the origination of the smoke from the sky need not be from a source outside the earth.

SUBMISSION PERSPECTIVE MARCH 1990

Prior to January 31, 1990, Dr. Khalifa completed and mailed the March 1990 newsletter.

Here are a few quotes from the newsletter:

– Mark My Words: Here is what will happen to the disbelievers
– As prophesied in 44:9-15:
– A massive asteroid will hit somewhere in the Middle East
– Total devastation will envelope the Arab world, main opponents of God, His miracle, and His Messenger of the Covenant (9:97, 3:81, 33:7)
– When will this happen? I do not know when; but I have a strong feeling that this will take place before the end of 1990. Only God knows the exact time.

– Here is what Almighty God Says:
– We are told clearly, by God Himself, that the day will come when a tremendous smoke will envelope all the people on earth. Scientists – astronomers- know that such a disaster can happen when an asteroid hits the earth. During 1989, the earth experienced a near-miss with a huge asteroid. That was God’s warning to the disbelievers.

The following are some observations about the newsletter:

1. Dr. Khalifa makes a distinction between his words (Mark my words) and God’s words (Here is what Almighty God Says).

2. Dr. Khalifa points out the strong feeling he had that this would happen before the end of 1990, noting that only God knows the exact time.

3. Consideration ought to be given to two points in the newsletter, the timing – the strong feeling he had that this would happen before the end of 1990, and the cause of the smoke as an asteroid strike. From the events of January 22, 1991 to November 1991 (see below) one may conclude that Dr. Khalifa’s emphasis was that prophecy of the smoke would occur shortly after his passing as per the Quran rather than how the smoke would occur.

4. The drawings in the newsletter and some wordings were inserted from an article published in a Tucson newspaper in January 1990. The article entitled, “One-hour broiling” dealt with an asteroid strike 65 million years ago which resulted in the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Dr. Khalifa states the following in the newsletter of March 1990 (which he inserted from the newspaper article):

Celestial firestorm
Comet or asteroid slams into earth
Vaporized rock and debris caused by the impact shoot into space
As the debris re-enters the atmosphere, each of the trillions of grains of sand would generate 1800 to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit.

CELESTIAL FIRESTORM AS DESCRIBED IN THE NEWSLETTER WILL ELIMINATE ALL HUMAN LIFE ON EARTH

Such an event per the same article will eliminate all life except for “tiny, primitive mammals; safe in their burrows, perhaps under some thick tropical forest…”

The article also states: “There would have been enough heat to set whole forests aflame…”
“Imagine the entire sky erupting with fire. Now feel the heat from such a horror – 10 times hotter than high noon on a July day in the Arizona desert. Hot enough to ignite much of the world’s forests like so much tinder. Hot enough to broil steaks – dinosaur steaks.”

DR. RASHAD KHALIFA’S MARTYRDOM – JANUARY 31, 1990

Dr. Rashad Khalifa was killed in Masjid Tucson on January 31, 1990.

MAY 19, 1990

Following Dr. Rashad Khalifa’s death, some submitters including the writer of this page predicted that May 19, 1990 would be the day when an asteroid will hit the Middle East precisely per the newsletter of March 1990. The date of May 19, 1990 originated from the submitters and was not predicted by Dr. Rashad Khalifa. Quite a few submitters in various cities in USA and Canada believed in such an outcome and promoted the “day of retribution” of May 19, 1990 to various media outlets including printing and distributing brochures. Masjid Tucson printed information in the May 1990, Submission Perspective including some brochures (1,2,3). Numerous comets were in the news at that time including Comet Austin.

May, 19, 1990 has a key link (prime number 109) to January 31, 1990, the day Dr. Rashad Khalifa died. There were 109 days between and including the two dates. Almost all of the miracle of 19 patterns in the Quran were reflected in the computations for May 19, 1990.

As we know, nothing happened on May 19, 1990.

The writer of this article is of the opinion that even though nothing happened on May 19, 1990, the day became a marker to identify the day of the smoke.

LESSON OF MAY 19, 1990 FOR SUBMITTERS

May 1990 provided various vital lessons to submitters. The significant lesson being – do not use the number 19 for anything other than the five reasons given in 74:31. Some learned the lesson of 519 by God’s grace.

The following is the outcome for those who did not learn the lesson:

1. Claim of messengership based on number 19 not realizing that the proof has already been delivered (36:69, 38:1, 41:41, 74:35).

2. Using number 19 to predict future events giving exact dates, which come and go.

3. Interpreting Quranic verses or derive meanings using the number 19.

Using number 19 to confirm or validate an event after it has occurred is not the problem, as Dr. Rashad Khalifa used 19 to confirm so many facts in the Quran, as well as to reveal the miracle or the proof that confirms the Quran.

IRAQ’S INVASION OF KUWAIT

Iraq, an Arab country, invaded another Arab country, Kuwait on August 2, 1990. Kuwait was declared the 19th province of Iraq and August 2, 1990 was the 76th (4 x 19) day from May 19, 1990, including both days.

THE DAY – OIL WELLS LIT ON JANUARY 22, 1991

On January 22, 1991, the first oil wells were lit by the Iraqi soldiers. Both the solar and lunar dates for January 22, 1991 are divisible by 19.

1+22+1991=2014 (19 x 106) and 7+7+1411=1425 (19 x 75)

There is no other day with similar attributes in 1991. The previous day with such attributes was May 19, 1990.

5+19+1990=2014 (19 x 106) and 10+24+1410=1444 (19 x 19 x 4)

There are exactly 247 (19 x 13) days between May 19, 1990 and January 22, 1991, thus establishing a link (albeit indirect) with the day Dr. Rashad Khalifa was martyred.

January 22, 1991 is the specific day (44:10) when the smoke started from the fire of the oil wells.

It is noteworthy that Dr. Rashad Khalifa attributed significance to certain days by adding the month, the day and the year; at the end of the Introduction, footnote of verse 33:7 and in Appendix 2 of his translation of the Quran.

SMOKE JANUARY 1991 – NOVEMBER 1991

Because of the oil well fires, the sky brought profound smoke from January 1991 through November 1991 for the people in Kuwait, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia and other surrounding countries. There was smoke from the sky with no sun and “black rain” in some areas. The smoke was clearly seen and photographed from space. The smoke lasted for a few months with the last burning oil well extinguished in November 1991.

Here are some images/videos of the smoke.

THE SMOKE OF THE OIL WELLS FULFILLS THE QURAN’S PROPHECY

The proposition that the smoke prophecy in the Quran was fulfilled in January 1991 is based on the following reasons.

1. QURAN 44:9-16

There is nothing in the events (Kuwait Oil Wells) which led to the smoke, nor the smoke itself which conflicts with verses 44:9-16 (see detail). The specific day was January 22, 1991. The sky brought profound smoke for the majority of the people affected by it.

Smoke is usually a result of fire.

The description of the splitting of the moon and the creature are embedded in the Quran as allegorical descriptions and were made clear to us by the messenger. The description of the smoke, an event to occur after the messenger is literal in the Quran. A literal description does not require a narrative.

2. LINK TO THE MESSENGER’S DAY OF PASSING AWAY

There is a link between the day Dr. Rashad Khalifa, God’s messenger of the Covenant, was martyred and the day the smoke started (44:13-14).

3. QURANIC PROPHECIES FULFILLED

– Splitting of the moon: 1969
Covenant fulfilled: 1972**
– Quran’s Mathematical Miracle: 1974
– The creature: 1980s
– Messenger of the Covenant: 1988
– Passing of the Messenger: 1990
– The Smoke: 1991

The smoke occurs after God’s Messenger of the Covenant has delivered the unified message and proclaimed Islam (Submission) as the only religion acceptable by God.

4. TIME-LINE SUPPORT

There is logical and time-line support for the smoke prophecy to have been fulfilled in January 1991. The logical explanation is that the prophecy is to occur after the messenger of the Covenant and that the retribution (44:11) be on the Arabs, who opposed God’s messenger and God’s miracle in the Quran. The time-line support comes from the fulfillment of various prophecies in the Quran in a “reasonable time frame” – splitting of the moon (1969), fulfillment of the covenant (1972), creature (1980s), miracle of the Quran (1974), God’s messenger (1988), departure of God’s messenger (1990) and the smoke (1991). The smoke took place 19 years after the fulfillment of the covenant**.

5. RETRIBUTION FOR THE ARABS

The events leading to and the retribution of the smoke is for Arabs, main opponents of God, His miracle, and His Messenger of the Covenant. The call from the Arabs of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to the USA for help, intervention and protection from another Arab country (Iraq), was a great humiliation for Muslims in general and Arabs specifically. Many Muslims, particularly from inside Iran, viewed the US as a “Great Satan.” Furthermore, this conflict was shameful in that it showed Arab/Muslim brother fighting Arab/Muslim brother. Even more humiliating in the eyes of many Muslims was the act of Arab soldiers kissing the boots of American soldiers in surrender. This act of surrender was shown on TV all over the world.
This was a period of humiliation for the Arabs/Muslims which culminated in the smoke.

6. DESTRUCTION OF COMMUNITIES AFTER SENDING MESSENGERS IN THE QURAN

There is no reference to the destruction of a community nor retribution on a major scale since the time of Moses in the Quran. The Quran narrates the complete destruction of communities of the first few messengers – Noah (flood), Hood (disastrous wind), Saalih (earthquake), Lot (asteroid or remnants of asteroid), Shu’aib (earthquake) and the dwellers of Al-Russ. The communities of Job and Jonah became believing communities. At the time of Moses, the signs of plague, flood, lice, locusts, frogs and blood were given. In addition, Pharaoh and his soldiers were killed as part of the retribution. God wills to explain things to us through past precedents (3:137, 4:26, 6:34, 11:17, 13:6, 14:45, 43:56).

7. REQUIREMENTS OF THE TEST

God’s signs and tests will not be like those which “forces their necks to bow” as it would nullify the tests, we have to go through in this life to make it to Heaven in the Hereafter. Based on verses 6:7-9, 6:158 and 26:4 one cannot expect a sign from the sky which forces one to believe.

All of God’s signs provide “exits” for those who have doubts or those who choose not to believe. This applies to the Glorious Quran (17:82, 41:44) as well as the prophecies within the Quran like the splitting of the moon, the creature, the miracle, the messenger and the smoke.

8. QURAN 34:46

[34:46] Say, “I ask you to do one thing: Devote yourselves to GOD, in pairs or as individuals, then reflect. Your friend (Rashad) is not crazy. He is a manifest warner to you, just before the advent of a terrible retribution.”

Verse 34:46 refers to the messenger of the Covenant, Rashad Khalifa, who is a warner just before retribution. Verse 44:13-14, as pointed out above, provides the historical fact of turning away from the messenger and the subsequent retribution caused by the smoke.

There is a link between 34:46 and 44:14 as both refer to the retribution after the messenger. The number of verses between 34:46 and 44:14, including both, is 777. Adding the Sura numbers 34 and 44 to 777, we get 855 which is 19*45.
In addition, 34+46+44+14+505+725 = 1368 or 19*72.

OBJECTIONS BY SUBMITTERS TO THIS CONCLUSION

All of the following objections are from those who believe God in the Quran that a messenger will come after all the prophets per 3:81. That messenger being Rashad Khalifa. For those who take Rashad Khalifa’s words in the March 1990 newsletter to heart, consideration ought to be given to the (1) timing and (2) the cause for the smoke in the newsletter. If one cannot accept the conclusion above that the smoke prophecy was fulfilled on Jan 22, 1991, it is thus acknowledged that Rashad Khalifa was wrong on timing specifically when he stated “…a divinely authorized retribution of this magnitude comes to pass ONLY and soon after the sending of God’s messenger (17:15)” and the timing in the March 1990 newsletter.

SMOKE WILL ENVELOP ALL THE PEOPLE AND ALL THE WORLD

Please note that the verse does not say ‘all the people.’ The same Arabic word in 2:24 and 66:6 does not mean all the people. By relying solely on God’s words in the Quran, as indeed one should, a conclusion cannot be drawn that the smoke will envelope all the people and all the world. Its only by reliance on words other than God’s words in the Quran, may one draw the conclusion that the smoke will envelop the whole world and all the people.

SMOKE MUST ORIGINATE OUTSIDE THE EARTH

From the dictionary definition of sky, whether in English or Arabic, an explicit conclusion cannot be made that the source of smoke has to be outside the earth. The Quran itself uses the word sky in numerous verses with quite a few verses referring to water from the sky. ‘Water from the sky’ originates from ground through the process of evaporation.

Dr. Rashad Khalifa, himself concluded that the origination of the smoke from the sky need not be from a source outside the earth in the June 1986 Muslim Perspective, stating, “The nuclear reactor’s accident of Chernobyl, USSR, fits all the descriptions as stated in Quran 44:10-15.”

THE TIMING OF ‘SOON’ CAN MEAN 50 OR 100 YEARS WHEN IT COMES TO GOD

As a general statement, correct. However, we are discussing the smoke prophecy linked to the messenger after the prophets.

The Quran states, ‘An enlightening messenger had come to them. But they turned away from him, saying, “Well educated, but crazy!”’ in verses 44:13-14

The messenger stated in his newsletter, “When will this happen? I do not know when; but I have a strong feeling that this will take place before the end of 1990. Only God knows the exact time.
Also, we learn from several verses in the Quran that a divinely authorized retribution of this magnitude comes to pass ONLY and soon after the sending of God’s messenger (17:15).”

The smoke prophecy took place 22 days after the end of 1990 precisely per the words of the Quran. For timing, would you rather be within time span of the prophecies fulfilled at the advents of the messenger after the prophets – the splitting of the moon (1969), fulfillment of the covenant (1972), creature (1980s), miracle of the Quran (1974), God’s messenger (1988), departure of God’s messenger (1990) and the smoke (1991); or will you be waiting for 50 years or 100 years or right before the end of the world. What is your basis from the words of the Quran for such a conclusion on the Timing?

SMOKE WILL OCCUR BEFORE THE END OF THE WORLD

The Quran has various prophecies to take place before the end of the world – splitting of the moon (54:1), fulfillment of the covenant in 3:81, Quran’s miracle (74:30-35), the creature (27:82), messenger of the covenant (3:81), the smoke (44:10) and God and Magog (18:84, 21:96).

Of all the prophecies above, only Gog and Magog will take place prior to the end of the world. All the other prophecies have been fulfilled. The fulfillment of the covenant and the smoke was in the 19-year period from January 1972 to January 1991. These prophecies of splitting of the moon, fulfillment of the covenant in 3:81, Quran’s miracle, the creature, messenger of the covenant and the smoke are all linked together as they all deal with God sending the miracle of the Quran through His messenger after all the prophets.

The Quran is clear in verses 44:13-14, that the smoke will occur after the messenger. Those claiming that the smoke will occur prior to the end of the world are invalidating clear Quran verses which link the smoke prophecy to the messenger after the prophets, rather than to the end of the world.

OBJECTIONS IN MASJIDTUCSON.ORG WEBSITE

The web page asserts that the prophecy has not occurred as the “effects described in 44:10-14 did not occur” with a cursory reference of verses 44:10-14, but without detail. Those details are covered in depth on this page.

The web page makes no attempt to refute any of the details provided in this page for those verses.

The web page refers to verse 17:92 (Or unless you cause masses from the sky, as you claimed, to fall on us) as “an element of prophecy as explained by God’s messenger.” Verses 17:90-93 are statements made by disbelievers. As is pointed out above – verses 71:26-28, 79:24 and 7:16 are examples of statements made by others in quotation marks which cannot be taken at face value just like verse 44:12 and indeed 17:90-93.

The web page refers to an asteroid. There is no reference to an asteroid in the Quran.

The web page refers to a major prophecy for all the people. This statement is correct just like the splitting of the moon, the creature and messenger of the Covenant as major prophecies for all the people in the Quran.

The web page refers at the end of its page to “a sign before the end of the world” invalidating the Quran verses that the smoke occurs after God’s Messenger of the Covenant has delivered the unified message, rather than something to happen before the end of the world.

The web page refers to “resultant smoke/dust/debris in the atmosphere” which cannot be supported by the words of 44:10-15.

The web page refers to 44:11 as a worldwide phenomenon which indeed was the case when the prophecy was fulfilled on Jan 22, 1991 as a world event. As pointed out above, verse 44:11 does not state “all the people,” it simply states “the people.” The Masjid Tucson page refers to the smoke to envelop the people to whom this prophecy is directed. This is also correct as the people it was directed to were the Arabs when the prophecy was fulfilled in 1991.

The web page refers to 44:12 and 44:14 but draws inaccurate conclusions. One inaccurate conclusion of “it will be a time when people will believe God’s message of Submission” or “mass acceptance” (covered below). The second inaccurate conclusion, “they will remember that God had sent His messenger to them but he had been disregarded as a well-educated but crazy person” was fulfilled in Dr. Khalifa’s life and acknowledged by him in the March 1990 newsletter.

God calls the Quran complete (6:115), fully detailed (6:114) and the only source (18:27). The web page fails to uphold the words of God in the Quran as the only source.

MESSAGE NOT WIDESPREAD / REMEMBRANCE OF RASHAD KHALIFA NOT THERE / NO VISIBLE RESPONSE TO MESSAGE / SMOKE WILL CAUSE THEM TO REMEMBER THE MESSENGER EN MASSE / PEOPLE WILL FINALLY REALIZE MESSENGER SPOKE THE TRUTH

The words of Sura 44 regarding the smoke do not, in any way, point to the smoke leading to a triumph.

A good case can be made that the message as of this point is not well spread, but a conclusion cannot be drawn from verses 44:10-16 that the smoke will result in triumph or mass acceptance of God’s messenger. The time-line mentioned above makes a credible case for the fulfillment of the smoke prophecy.

Also, we do not see anything in verses 44:9-16 to conclude that people en masse would accept Dr. Rashad Khalifa as God’s messenger as a result of the smoke. See the discussion above. The prophecy in the Quranic words, An enlightening messenger HAD come to them. But they TURNED AWAY from him, saying, “Well educated, but crazy!” was fulfilled prior to Dr. Khalifa’s departure which he acknowledged in his newsletter.

The mathematical miracle of the Quran, the advent of the messenger of the covenant, the creature; did not result is mass acceptance of the messenger. Why, then conclude that the smoke will result in mass acceptance when the Quran does not state so?

THE UNSPOKEN OBJECTIONS

One unspoken objection is “how dare you claim this is from the Quran (and thus from God)?”

Another unspoken objection is, “how dare you claim this when you have no authority?

Those who have these unspoken objections ignore or forget the fact that God provided information from within the Quran to various submitters, Abdullah Arik being one of many submitters without this perceived ‘authority.’

The verses (44:10-15) about the smoke are literal and clear. God sent the messenger of the Covenant, concurrent with the prophecies of splitting of the moon, fulfillment of the covenant, Quran’s miracle and the creature. The messenger pointed to embedded information from within the Quran on fulfillment of those prophecies, which prior to his pointing out, qualified as allegorical. In addition, the messenger pointed to 44:10-15 for the smoke prophecy to occur after “enlightening messenger had come to them”. This page points out, as mentioned above, that the smoke prophecy took place in accordance with the verses of the Quran – after an enlightening messenger had come, and the prophecy fulfilled within a few days of what the messenger wrote in his last newsletter.

This prophecy takes place after ‘messenger had come to them’ per verse 44:13. Verse 72:27 (Only to a messenger that He chooses, does He reveal from the past and the future, specific news) applies to Rashad Khalifa as the messenger who brought forth specific news about the future. The smoke prophecy took place in accordance with the words of the Quran right after the messenger had come. Recognition of the smoke prophecy, right after the messenger, in accordance with the words of the Quran, does not entail a pronouncement or declaration by an authoritative figure. It is simply acceptance or recognition, after verification, similar to Abdullah Arik’s findings in the Quran.

THE SMOKE AS AN OUTCOME OF AN ASTEROID STRIKE WAS GIVEN TO THE MESSENGER

We simply do not have the option of accepting anything which cannot be verified from the Quran (17:36).  As pointed out above, God calls the Quran complete (6:115), fully detailed (6:114) and the only source (18:27). Dr. Khalifa’s consistent reminder was, “Don’t go by what I say, go by the Quran.”

The year 2280 as the end of the world can be verified from the Quran.

The appearance of God and Magog, just 10 years from the end of the world is also verifiable from the Quran.

There is nothing in the Quran from which we can conclude that asteroid strike will result in the smoke prophecy, nor is there any indication by the messenger that this information was ‘given’ to him.

THE HIDDEN OBJECTION – DISINCLINED TO ACCEPT THE QURAN AS THE ONLY SOURCE

The seeming helplessness to accept the Quran as complete (6:115), fully detailed (6:114) and the only source (18:27) is prevalent among quite a few. This topic is beyond the scope of this write up. However additional information is available and some questions.

NEWSLETTER OF MARCH 1990 HAS STRONG LANGUAGE, “MARK MY WORDS”

Dr. Rashad Khalifa, in his style of writing and specifically in writing the monthly newsletter of Submission Perspective, used strong language. This can be verified by going through all his newsletters. In some newsletters, Dr. Rashad Khalifa used stronger language like “proclamation through Gabriel” (September 1989 and November 1989).

MESSENGERS DO NOT SPEAK ON THEIR OWN REGARDING PROPHECY – THEREFORE THE SMOKE MUST OCCUR IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE MESSENGER’S PROPHECY

In the February 1990 Newsletter, Dr. Khalifa states, “As stated in 3:81 and 46:9, God’s Messenger of the Covenant does not bring anything new; everything I receive and pass on to you is already in the Quran.”

Dr. Rashad Khalifa was a messenger, not a prophet. As messenger of the Covenant, he brought forth embedded information within the Quran. Thus, in accordance with 72:27-28, the end of the world was revealed to him which can be verified from the embedded information. Similarly, the prophecy of the appearance of Gog and Magog just before the end of the world can be verified from the Quran.

Although Dr. Khalifa stated in his newsletter that, “…such a disaster can happen when an asteroid hits the earth,” some submitters insist that an asteroid strike must happen because the messenger “was given news of the future.” Only verifiable prophecy or sign from the Quran matters. The explicit cause of smoke as an asteroid hit is not verifiable from the Quran.

In the May 1985 newsletter, Dr. Khalifa states, “Based on the word of God …I herein predict Fahd shall be the last Saudi King.” Dr. Khalifa similarly gave an opinion of the cause of smoke as an asteroid.

NOT A SPECTACULAR EVENT (LIKE THE MOON LANDING)

The moon landing was recognized all around the world as an historical event because it was the first ever of its kind. Even though no one at the time knew it was the fulfilment of a prophecy, everyone appreciated the significance of such an accomplishment. Millions of viewers were glued to their TV sets as the first images were transmitted back to earth as men set foot for the first time ever on the moon. Only those who can grasp the Quran would appreciate the other prophecies like the creature, the miracle and the messenger. The smoke in January 1991 was quite spectacular. It was a worldwide phenomenon in terms of its scope and the environmental concern it generated.

1991 SMOKE INITIATED BY MAN

The splitting of the moon, the creature and the smoke were all initiated by men. As submitters we are blessed with the knowledge that God controls everything and that not even a leaf falls without His knowledge.

SCALE OF SMOKE COMPARED TO OTHER SMOKES

This can be researched by other submitters but any other previous smoke will fail the time-line test.

* In the letter I wrote the following in the first paragraph:
Some of us, including myself, took those signs to incorrectly proclaim May 19, 1990 as the day of retribution as prophesied in Dr. Khalifa’s last newsletter and Sura 44.

In hindsight a more appropriate choice of words should have been:
Some of us, including myself, took those signs to incorrectly proclaim May 19, 1990 as the day of retribution which Dr. Khalifa warned of in his last newsletter and Sura 44.

** The correct solar date which corresponds with Zul-Hijja 3, 1391 is January 19, 1972 rather than December 21, 1971 as reported by Dr. Rashad Khalifa in the footnote of 33:7 and Appendix 2. Thus the smoke prophecy on 1-22-1991 was fulfilled precisely 19 years after fulfillment of the covenant on 1-19-1972.

  1. Salam,
This is a very detailed analysis of the Smoke Prophecy in the Quran, Sura-44.
Requires careful thought and Quranic references for each individual Submitter, before they can come to ‘in agreement’ with the stated facts fully comply with the Prophesy in the Quran.
Keeping in mind that Azhar Khan is among the contemporary believers of Rashad Khalifa, Messenger of God as prophesized in the Quran, I am taking time to analyze the events to assure my heart that these events comply with the Qur’an Prophesy.
Salam and regards to all submitters.

    1. Salaam Gholam Rabbi,

You correctly point out that each individual submitter should verify from the Quran on the proposition that the smoke prophecy in Sura 44 was fulfilled on Jan 22, 1991.

It is great to know that you are taking time to research if the events comply with God’s words in the Quran.

You shall not accept any information unless you verify it for yourself. I have given you the hearing, the eyesight, and the brain, and you are responsible for using them. [Quran 17:36]

    1. Salaam,

Thank you for your comments. from you link:

“Some say this prophecy is the burning of an oil refinery in Kuwait, the Chernobyl Nuclear Reactor Case, forest fires in Indonesia, or even Jewish Internment Camps in Germany during WW2. But they forget, all this is not a great strike! The most reasonable thing is the fall of an asteroid or the fall of a nuclear bomb.”

As you indicate “when rk says something but without proof (code number 19), it means it’s just guessing.” So too is the guessing of an asteroid or a nuclear bomb. Neither of which has support in the Quran.
